Galen Rupp of Oregon (pictured here in 2008) will compete in the DI Championships, which begin today.
More than 750 athletes are set to take center stage at the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13-14 at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
At the 2008 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, Arizona State University won the men's and women's team titles at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. The women successfully defended their 2007 team title with 51 points while the men earned their first title with 44 points.
Oregon’s men and Texas A&M’s women are chasing national team titles, as they enter the competition ranked first in the power rankings released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Among the athletes to watch:
Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego will be chasing her ninth and a record-breaking tenth national title this weekend. Her quest begins tonight with the 5,000m final. She also is entered in the mile, where the final is Saturday. Kipyego ran a personal best 4:27.19 in the mile last month and in January clocked a collegiate record 8:48.77 in the 3,000m at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
2008 Olympic steeplechase Jenny Barringer of Colorado enters the 3,000m ranked # 1 on the descending order list with a time of 8:53.88. So far this season, she has set two collegiate records, in the mile (4:25.91) and the 5k (15:01.71).
Oregon’s Galen Rupp, a 2008 Olympian who set the American indoor record in the 5,000m (13:18.12), the U.S. collegiate record in the 3,000m (7:44.69) and ran a 3:57.86 in the mile, is the top entrant in the men’s 3,000m and 5,000m and could possibly run on the Ducks’ DMR. He told the Oregonian this week that he would willingly step into the distance medley relay if UO coach Vin Lananna and associate head coach Dan Steele determine they need him to enhance the Ducks' chances of winning the meet.
