INDIANAPOLIS - Fernando Cabada has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the 2008 USA Men's Marathon Championship Sunday in Minneapolis, Minn.
The American record-holder over 25 km, Cabada won the men's marathon in 2 hours 16 minutes 32 seconds. At 14 miles, Cabada moved to the front of the lead pack where he waited to make his move which came on a short uphill just before 18 miles. By 19 miles he had opened a 60-meter lead, which would grow to 1:07 by the finish, despite being on his own to battle the wind and rain.
Now in its seventh year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
